Big Eco Song Competition 2025-2026

Calling all nurseries and primary schools across the island of Ireland!
We’re bringing back our Big Eco Song Competition to celebrate World Earth Day 2026, and we’re inviting you to write original lyrics for a 1-minute song (in English or Irish) to showcase your school’s Eco-Code. Winners will get a professional recording of their song!
We have created two backing tracks to choose from, one pop and one rap. You can either create your own melody or, if selected as a winner, work with the Weatherbies music team to come up with one. Entries will be judged on the creativity and originality of your lyrics only, to make it as easy as possible to take part!
How to Enter
Entering is simple:
- Pick one of the two backing tracks for inspiration – download from https://s.disco.ac/vlxxawlctidu.
- Write original song lyrics based on your Eco-Code and include at least one of The Weatherbies characters.
- Create at least one piece of original artwork featuring one or more of The Weatherbies characters.
- Upload your submissions using our Google form, before 30th January 2026.
Competition opens 3rd September 2025, and closes midnight, 30th January 2026!
The Prize
The winning nurseries or schools will get a visit from the Weatherbies music team to create and record your song. We’ll combine the lyrics, melody and your chosen pop or rap backing track with the children’s pictures of Sammy Sun, Rosie Rainbow and the gang to create a video promoting your nursery or school’s Eco-Code. You keep the copyright of your lyrics and artwork, so you can use it for a school fundraiser or promotion!
The Rules
- Each school may submit one original lyric per class, with no limit on the number of class entries per school.
- Songs should be written around the school Eco-Code (which may be created for this competition) and feature at least one of The Weatherbies characters
- Songs can be written in English or as Gaeilge.
- Songs should be accompanied by original artwork (as much as you like).
- Songs and artwork must be age-appropriate and not contain any offensive content or personal information that could cause embarrassment (please don’t include any teacher’s name, for example).
- For each language category (English or Irish), one nursery or primary school will be chosen by a professional panel, including independent judges.
Winners will be announced on Earth Day, 22nd April 2026, and The Weatherbies music team will visit the winning schools in May 2026 to record their winning entries.
Does this sound like fun? We think so! All you have to do is upload your original lyrics and artwork when they’re ready, using our upload form. Scroll down for tips on creating a good submission – full terms & conditions are available here.
We can’t wait to enjoy your school’s submission!
The Big Eco Song Competition is being supported by our Official Early Years Partner, Eco-Schools Northern Ireland, and COGG.
*An Eco-Code is a school’s mission statement about its values and commitment towards improving its environmental performance (learn how to create one with Eco-Schools NI).
Tips for Making a Good Submission
SUBMITTING YOUR LYRICS
✅ You can upload your lyrics file in most standard text file formats – .doc, .docx, .odt, .txt, .rtf, or .pdf.
✅ Keep your lyrics saved somewhere handy in case of technical issues.
SUBMITTING YOUR ARTWORK
The children’s artwork should be scanned or photographed for uploading via our Google entry form. If your school has a school crest or logo, you can upload that too.
✅ When you scan or photograph your artwork, save the files in .jpeg, .png, .tiff, or .pdf formats.
✅ To get nice crisp images if taking a photograph, bright, natural lighting is best!
✅ Double check your images before sending to make sure they’re free of blurring or anything unexpected (e.g. a bright spot from a flash or overhead light).
✅ Keep the original versions of your artwork handy in case there are any issues and you need to re-scan or re-photograph them.
